About Saint Rose of Lima
Born in Lima, Peru, in 1586, Saint Rose of Lima was baptized Isabel Flores de Oliva and developed a profound love for Our Lord and the Blessed Virgin Mary during childhood. Inspired by Saint Catherine of Siena, she embraced a life of prayer, sacrifice, and voluntary poverty, eventually becoming a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic while continuing to live in her family’s home. Rather than seeking worldly recognition or marriage, Saint Rose consecrated her virginity to God and spent long hours in prayer, practicing penance and offering sacrifices for the conversion of sinners. She supported her family through gardening and needlework while generously caring for the sick, poor, and suffering. Her life was marked by mystical experiences, deep humility, and an extraordinary willingness to endure hardship for love of Christ. Saint Rose died on August 24, 1617, at thirty-one years old and was canonized in 1671, becoming the first canonized saint born in the Americas. Her example reminds Catholic families that holiness flourishes through faithful prayer, self-denial, charity, and the loving fulfillment of everyday responsibilities.
