About Saint Raphael the Archangel

Saint Raphael the Archangel appears in the Book of Tobias as a heavenly messenger sent by God to answer the prayers of the righteous. Disguised as a human traveling companion named Azarias, Raphael accompanies the young Tobias on a journey, protecting him from danger and guiding him toward his future wife, Sara. Along the way, Raphael instructs Tobias to catch a fish whose organs would later serve important purposes in God’s providential plan. Through Raphael’s guidance, Sara is delivered from the oppression of a demon, and Tobias is united with her in a holy marriage. Upon returning home, Tobias uses the fish’s gall, according to Raphael’s instructions, to restore the sight of his blind father, Tobit.

After completing his mission, Saint Raphael reveals his true identity as one of the seven angels who stand before the glory of God. His name, meaning “God heals,” reflects his heavenly ministry of bringing divine assistance to those who suffer in body or soul. Throughout Catholic tradition, Saint Raphael has been invoked for protection during travel, healing from illness, guidance in marriage, and the safeguarding of families. His example reminds Catholic households that God’s providential care often works through unseen heavenly assistance, encouraging families to remain faithful in prayer and place their confidence in Divine Providence.
