About Saint Martin de Porres

Saint Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, in 1579, the son of a Spanish nobleman and a formerly enslaved woman. Raised amid poverty and discrimination, he learned the skills of a barber and caregiver before entering a Dominican priory as a young man. Eventually admitted as a professed lay brother, Martin embraced the humblest duties with extraordinary love. He spent his days cleaning, tending the sick, feeding the hungry, and assisting those who had nowhere else to turn. His deep devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and constant prayer strengthened his spirit of charity.

Throughout his religious life, Saint Martin was renowned for his kindness toward people of every background and even toward animals. Numerous miracles, including extraordinary healings, have traditionally been attributed to his intercession. Despite his growing reputation for holiness, he remained profoundly humble, seeking neither recognition nor earthly reward. Saint Martin died on November 3, 1639, leaving a remarkable example of Christian charity. His life reminds Catholic families that even the smallest acts of kindness, when offered out of love for God, can become powerful works of holiness.
