About Saint Mark the Evangelist
Saint Mark the Evangelist, also known as John Mark, was among the earliest followers of Christianity. His mother’s home in Jerusalem served as a gathering place for the faithful, and he later accompanied Saint Paul and Saint Barnabas in their missionary work. Mark also became a close companion of Saint Peter, who affectionately referred to him as his son. According to ancient Christian tradition, Mark recorded Saint Peter’s preaching in the Gospel that bears his name, preserving the teachings and mighty works of Our Lord Jesus Christ for future generations.
Saint Mark is traditionally credited with establishing the Church in Alexandria, Egypt, where he labored to spread the Gospel and strengthen the faithful. Ancient tradition holds that he suffered martyrdom for his unwavering witness to Christ. His symbol, the winged lion, represents the powerful proclamation of the Gospel. Honored throughout Christendom, Saint Mark reminds Catholic families to treasure Sacred Scripture, courageously profess their faith, and faithfully proclaim the truth of Jesus Christ.
