About Saint Dymphna
According to ancient Christian tradition, Saint Dymphna was born in Ireland to a pagan king and a Christian mother. Secretly baptized and raised in the Catholic faith, she dedicated her virginity to Almighty God at a young age. Following her mother’s death, her father sought to marry Dymphna himself. Refusing to betray her purity and devotion to Christ, she fled Ireland with her spiritual adviser, Saint Gerebernus, and eventually settled in Geel, in present-day Belgium.
Tradition relates that Dymphna devoted herself to prayer and charitable works until her father discovered her whereabouts. When she again refused his demands, he ordered Gerebernus killed and personally beheaded his daughter. Although the historical details of her martyrdom remain uncertain, devotion to Saint Dymphna flourished in Geel, where a remarkable tradition of compassionate care for those with mental illness developed. Her example reminds Catholic families to remain faithful to God, defend human dignity, and offer charity and understanding to those who suffer.
