About Saint Dominic de Guzman

Saint Dominic de Guzmán was born around 1170–1174 in Caleruega, Spain, into a devout Catholic family. After studying theology and entering the priesthood, he developed a profound concern for souls endangered by religious error. While traveling through southern France, he encountered the Albigensian heresy and devoted himself to restoring the Catholic faith through preaching, prayer, penance, and charitable instruction. His dedication attracted companions who shared his missionary calling. In 1216, Pope Honorius III formally approved the Order of Preachers, establishing the Dominican Order.

Saint Dominic lived with remarkable humility, poverty, and love for the Blessed Virgin Mary. Catholic tradition especially associates him with devotion to the Holy Rosary, which became central to Dominican spirituality. He sent his friars throughout Europe to defend the faith and bring souls closer to Christ. Saint Dominic died in Bologna in 1221 and was canonized in 1234. His life reminds Catholic families to love the truth, pray faithfully, practice charity, and place the salvation of souls above worldly ambitions.
