About Saint Sebastian
Saint Sebastian lived during the third century, when Christians throughout the Roman Empire faced persecution for refusing to abandon their Faith. According to ancient Christian tradition, he served in the Roman military and secretly assisted imprisoned Christians, offering them encouragement and strengthening their resolve to remain faithful to Our Lord. When his Christian beliefs became known, he was condemned to death and tied to a post, where archers pierced his body with arrows. Miraculously surviving this punishment, he was reportedly cared for by Saint Irene of Rome. Rather than fleeing, Sebastian courageously confronted Emperor Diocletian and condemned the persecution of Christians. He was subsequently beaten to death and buried along the Appian Way in Rome. Although many details of his martyrdom belong to later devotional tradition, Saint Sebastian’s witness continues to remind Catholic families that true courage comes from remaining faithful to God despite suffering, opposition, or danger.
