About Saint Anthony of Padua
Saint Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195 and baptized Fernando. As a young man, he entered religious life with the Augustinian Canons, devoting himself to prayer and the study of Sacred Scripture. Inspired by the martyrdom of Franciscan missionaries, he later joined the Franciscan Order and took the name Anthony. Although he initially desired to become a missionary and martyr, Divine Providence led him to Italy, where his remarkable gift for preaching became known. His sermons brought many sinners to repentance and strengthened the faithful in their love for Christ.
Saint Anthony became renowned for his humility, profound biblical knowledge, and extraordinary miracles. Tradition recounts that the Christ Child appeared to him, which is why he is frequently depicted holding the Infant Jesus. He worked tirelessly to defend Catholic truth, care for the poor, and reconcile those separated from God. Saint Anthony died near Padua in 1231 and was canonized less than a year later. Declared a Doctor of the Church in 1946, he reminds Catholic families to cherish Sacred Scripture, practice charity, and trust in God’s providential care.
